Starting 2017 working with the all-of-government digital services team.
Posted on:As we kick off 2017, I’m thrilled to be part of the all-of-government digital services team in Wellington, New Zealand. It’s been an exhilarating journey since joining Government Information Services (GIS) a year ago, where we’ve been working tirelessly to create user-friendly, high-quality digital services for both citizens and government agencies.
Momentum and milestones
Our team has already achieved significant milestones including:
- The implementation of a new intranet for the New Zealand public sector
- Launching a revamped open data platform: data.govt.nz
These achievements have been made possible by using agile methodologies, empowering teams, and fostering a culture of rapid iteration and frequent releases.
Guiding principles for success
Here are some of the things that help us progress this work
1. Focus on problem-solving
As Steve Jobs once said:
“If you define the problem correctly, you almost have the solution.”
We’ve learned to break down seemingly insurmountable user problems into manageable themes, leading to achievable goals that make a real impact.
2. Strategy as a catalyst
Gone are the days of piecemeal approaches to digital service development. We’ve found that a clear, collaborative digital strategy is crucial for motivating product teams and delivering impactful outcomes for users.
3. Fostering collaborative teams
Building empowered, creative teams is at the heart of our success. We’ve created an environment that promotes open communication, celebrates achievements, and encourages experimentation.
Agile pioneer Jim Highsmith emphasises this approach:
“Agile teams work best in a collaborative environment that fosters communication and cooperation.”
Looking forward (over our shoulders!)
The digital landscape is ever-changing, with evolving user needs, behaviours, and expectations. However, our newly structured organisation provides a solid foundation for confidently designing and delivering consolidated, valued, and widely-used digital services for New Zealanders.
With our dedicated team and innovative approach, we’re poised to make 2017 a transformative year.
